Introduction of the 13th ASEAN University Games

ASEAN University Games is held every two years in countries of ASEAN University Sports Council AUSC. The Vietnamese University Sports Association has become one of the official members of AUSC since 1992.

The AUSC chairman asked The Vietnamese University Sports Association to hold the 13 th ASEAN University Games (in 2006) in a written statement sent to the association on 12 th Jun 2004.

I mplementing the resolution adopted by the 9 th Party Congress and guiding texts of Party and Government about education, sport and foreign affairs in new situation (especially enhancing the co-operation among the ASEAN Countries), the Ministry of Education and Training have submitted a statement to Prime Minister about being the host of the 13 th ASEAN University Games - 2006.

Receiving the permission of the Prime Minister with the document No. 6791/VPCP-VX, the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnamese University Sports Association have already finished all necessary documents to take the role of host and got the official right to organize the Games on 12 th Dec 2004.

Vietnam hosts the 13 th ASEAN University Games at the time when the renovation has been bringing the country many economic and social achievements. Vietnam, now, has become a higher standing position in the world with the stability of politics, society and security. The physical training and sport is making much progress and getting higher position through the SEA Games. Specially, Vietnam has just held successfully the 22 nd SEA Games, the 2 nd ASEAN PARA Games and ASEAN Ministers Meeting. In addition, Vietnam also has many practical experiences in hosting the regional, continental and world games.

With the advantages and the ability of holding well the recent great international sports games, the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training is making plans for the organization of the 13 th ASEAN University Games - 2006 as follows:

1.    The Scope

·      To carry out the foreign policies, the direction of integration of Party and Government; to create a good condition for Vietnam students to exchange and take full comprehensive integrations in sports with ASEAN students.

·      To bring into play the nation's cultural tradition, sporting spirit, hospitability in all activities to make a deep impression on international friendship.

·      To develop the movements of physical training and sports to all people, especially pupils, students in order to improving their health, stature and achievements of Vietnam sports.

2.    Demand

·     To respect all regulations of the ASEAN University Sports Council.

·     To ensure security, safety during the Games.

·     To hold the Games successfully in every aspects and to give Vietnam student athletes a chance to get the high position of the rank with great achievements.

6 Nations sent their primary registration of 642 athletes

According to the Organizing Committee Operating Center of the 13 th AU Games, there has been 6 nations registering their names with the total of 624 athletes and 196 officials.  

        The number of athletes attending this year Games is said to be much bigger than that of the 12 th ASEAN University Games took place in Indonesia in 2004. The 12 th Games in Indonesia was attended by 196 athletes from Indonesia, 170 from Thailand, 93 from Singapore, 150 from Malaysia, 08 from The Philippines, 26 from Vietnam, 02 from Cambodia, 22 form East Timor, 02 from Laos and 38 from Brunei competing in 10 sports with the total of 707 athletes. Meanwhile it is estimated in the 13 th Games that there will be about 1500 athletes competing in 12 sports with 157 events. The host nation plans to bring 350 athletes to the Games to compete in every event.  

          According to the primary registration, Thailand will send 220 athletes and 80 officials to the 13 th Games. Thailand is the second to Vietnam in the number of athletes. Though Malaysia has not sent their primary registration, the leader of Malaysian delegation revealed via emails that they will send many athletes to the 13 th Games to compete in every event. There will be 150 athletes from Indonesia, about 100 from Laos, 118 from Singapore, 30 from the Philippines and 6 from Cambodia. Brunei has not announced their official number of athletes.  

          However, this report is only contemporary. According to the Regulation and Rules of the 13 th Games, the official number of athletes and officials must be announced by the Member Countries 03 months before the Opening Ceremony.
